The appearance of the labia can cause a variety of issues for women. Beyond self-consciousness about appearance and sexuality, excess tissue in the labia minora (or inner lips of the vagina) can create discomfort or even pain in everyday life. A lengthened labia minora may result in pain when exercising or during intercourse and discomfort and confidence issues when wearing certain types of clothing. Other women have issues with deflation, laxity and loss of volume in the labia majora (or outer lips of the vagina). Often overlooked, the labia can create a variety of problems both medical and cosmetic. The labiaplasty procedure is a customizable and permanent solution, offering relief from discomfort and renewed confidence. Dr. Ourian offers the best labiaplasty Beverly Hills patients can obtain and is renowned for being arguably one of the best labiaplasty surgeons in Los Angeles.

What is Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty, also known as “vaginal labiaplasty” or generically referred to as “vaginal rejuvenation,” is a plastic surgery procedure which changes the shape and appearance of the labia minora and/or majora. Depending on your specific goals, a labiaplasty can reduce the length of the labia minora or increase the fullness of the labia majora. This can be performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons.

Who is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

Women who experience pain or discomfort related to excessive tissue of the labia minora are usually good candidates for our Beverly Hills labiaplasty. For example, patients who experience pain or discomfort while riding a bike or during intercourse due to their labia can often benefit from the procedure. Often, this is the result of damage to the labia minora during childbirth, but longer labia can also be genetic. Other patients may choose the procedure simply because they feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia minora. A labiaplasty will ultimately result in more symmetrical labia and results can be tailored to meet the patient’s aesthetic preferences.

Other women may feel that their labia majora has loss of tone and volume. This can be a problem of having too much skin and/or having too little volume in the labia majora. These women are good candidates for an augmentation labiaplasty.

Finally, before having a labiaplasty, you should be generally healthy overall. Dr. Ourian will evaluate your health, symptoms, and concerns to determine whether you are a good candidate for labiaplasty during a thorough consultation.

How is a Labiaplasty Performed?

Our Los Angeles Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Depending on your anatomy and goals for the procedure, Dr. Ourian may use one of three techniques

Trim Labiaplasty

A trim labiaplasty involves removing excess, overhanging tissue from the labia minora and placing dissolvable sutures directly. This is the most common and most popular labiaplasty method.

Wedge Labiaplasty

A wedge labiaplasty involves removing a pie- or v-shaped piece of tissue from the labia minora. This technique maintains the natural border and color of the labia. Using this technique, excess folds of tissue from the clitoral hood may also be reduced according to the patient’s preference. Once excess tissue has been removed and the procedure is complete, Dr. Ourian will use dissolvable sutures to close the incisions.

Augmentation Labiaplasty or Labial Puff

An augmentation labiaplasty, or labial puff, involves adding volume to the labia majora in the form of a fat transfer. Fat is first harvested via liposuction in other areas of the body, including the abdomen, inner thighs or love handles. The fat is the specially prepared and injected into the labia majora to restore a more youthful and full appearance.  If there is excess skin in the labia majora, it can also be excised at that time.

What is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

Labiaplasty patients should have a trusted friend or family member to drive them home after the procedure. Swelling and some discomfort are expected after a labiaplasty, and most patients require between 3 to 5 days of downtime after the surgery before they are ready to return to work or other normal routines. Ice packs can be used to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Patients should avoid rigorous exercise (such as bike riding, pilates and yoga) as well as sex for at least 4 to 6 weeks after their labiaplasty. In addition, you should avoid lifting heavy objects or submerging the treatment area in water during this time.

Although most swelling subsides after 4 to 6 weeks, it can sometimes persist for longer. Dr. Ourian will give you detailed instructions for your recovery period and monitor your healing through follow-up visits after your surgery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, recent studies indicate that labiaplasty has a very high degree of patient satisfaction and success.

What Procedures Can I Combine with Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is frequently combined with a tummy tuck or breast lift, reduction, or augmentation. This combination procedure is known as a mommy makeover, and it serves to address the changes that can occur in a woman’s body as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

A tummy tuck reduces excess or loose skin and tightens the muscles in the abdominal area. Liposuction is also used to reduce stubborn pockets of fat. This creates a toned look and repairs damage to the abdominal area after pregnancy.

A breast augmentation creates larger breasts or restores lost volume using saline or silicone implants. When used as part of a mommy makeover, breast augmentation addresses the “deflated” look that breasts can have after pregnancy and breastfeeding. If the breasts have become excessively large as a result of the changes throughout pregnancy, a breast reduction is another option to restore a more balanced and proportionate look and reduce symptoms like neck or back pain. Finally, a breast lift returns sagging breasts to a higher, more youthful position.

FAQS:

Frequently asked questions

Will a labiaplasty affect my sensation during sex?
A labiaplasty should not lower sensation during intercourse. In fact, many women who have undergone labiaplasty report enhanced sexual sensation and satisfaction after the procedure.
Should I wait until I’m done having children to have a labiaplasty?
Some women wait until they no longer wish to have children before they have a labiaplasty, but this isn’t always necessary. A labiaplasty should not have an effect on your ability to get pregnant or give birth, and childbirth generally does not jeopardize your labiaplasty results so long as you have fully healed from the procedure.
Will I have scars after labiaplasty?
Scars from labiaplasty surgery are not noticeable because they are concealed within the natural folds and contours of the labia.
When can I have sex after a labiaplasty?
You should be able to resume intercourse approximately 4 to 6 weeks after a labiaplasty.
How long does the labiaplasty procedure take?
On average, labiaplasties take about 1 hour to complete. You will be able to go home the same day as the procedure.
